SHAH ALAM, Sept 18 — The Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) has dismissed allegations that it has not acted against factories operating illegally in Teluk Gong, Klang, resulting in pollution.
Its corporate communications director Norfiza Mahfiz said the council’s licensing and enforcement departments have conducted 18 inspections in the area throughout the year.
During this period, 27 compounds were issued to factory operators for various offences, including operating without a licence and drainage and air pollution violations.
“MBDK continuously monitors the Teluk Gong area to ensure compliance with regulations.
“According to statistics, there are 274 licensed factories in the area. Of these, 47 are related to plastics, of which three hold Import Permits,” she told Media Selangor.
Norfiza was responding to a report in a local Malay daily published on Sunday (September 15) alleging that Teluk Gong was experiencing pollution from numerous industrial waste processing factories suspected of operating illegally.
She said MBDK is also collaborating with the Environment Department and the Selangor Water Management Authority to conduct enforcement in Teluk Gong.
“The claim by residents and non-governmental organisations that MBDK does not monitor and inspect Teluk Gong is entirely inaccurate,” Norfiza said.
