SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — Selangor is monitoring the performance of its 12 local authorities to ensure public services align with the federal rating system introduced by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT).

“We welcome KPKT’s initiative to implement this rating system. In Selangor, we are already using key performance indicators to evaluate the performance of all 12 local authorities,” state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said.

“Moving forward, we will closely monitor each local authority’s operations, as their performance directly impacts the state’s image,” he said when contacted.

On Monday, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced the traffic light rating system, through which the performance of all 156 local authorities in the country will be evaluated from next year.

Well-performing local councils will be marked with a “green light” and will be eligible for additional funding.

Those in the “yellow light” category will receive warnings and may have their funding reviewed, while local authorities with a “red light” could face funding cuts and see their future financial requests denied.

Ng said the new system will promote healthy competition among local councils, encouraging them to improve services for the public.

He added that the standardisation will allow citizens to more easily monitor the performance of their respective local authorities.

“This system helps residents ensure local councils in Selangor and across Malaysia carry out their duties effectively and responsibly,” he said.
